Overview
ACT24 is a web-based physical activity assessment tool developed by investigators at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). It was created in collaboration between the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (Nutritional Epidemiology Branch) and the Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (Risk Factor Monitoring and Methods Branch).
The tool enables cancer patients to self-report a wide range of activities they engaged in over the previous 24 hours. Activities are organized into categories, and selecting a category reveals specific options for users to choose from, ensuring a detailed and comprehensive recall of physical activity and sedentary behavior.
Goals
Automated 24-Hour Recalls: Facilitate multiple automated, self-administered 24-hour recalls of physical activity and sedentary behavior.Researcher Access: Allow approved researchers to manage their studies by:
- Updating study details.
- Viewing study progress.
- Downloading analysis files.
Web Services Integration: Provide APIs for organizations to retrieve study and recall data from the ACT24 database based on predefined parameters, enabling seamless integration with external systems.
Problems
Outdated Application: The tool lacks modern features, with users expressing frustration over its inflexibility and unintuitive design.
Compatibility Issues: The application only functions on Microsoft platforms, limiting accessibility for diverse user bases.

Prototype
For the app prototype, I adopted a mobile-first, responsive design approach to ensure compatibility across all platforms. The participant interface was designed as a seamless, single-page application, offering a consistent user experience on mobile, desktop, and tablet devices without requiring separate versions.
